The first person shooter has changed immensely in the last 20 years since Doom first came out for the PC in 1993.
Back in the day, gamers had to rely on were their wits and steady aim to defeat the minions of hell. Now we have scripted events, rechargeable health, a HUD that tells you where to go, paid DLC, and in-game ads. It’s a brave new world for FPSs.
So what would Doom look like if it were made today with all these new tropes in mind? That’s exactly what the guys at Chubzdoomer wanted to find out so they created a video series called Call of Dooty.
It’s pretty funny to see things like marines breaching a room in classic Doom assets, but it helps really helps to drive the point home – we have come along way as an industry. I saw the 3rd video posted on Destructoid the other day and got a kick out of it so I decided to feature all three. The videos are pretty long, but are definitely worth checking out when you get a chance.
