The NSFW Gamer Podcast Episode 10

The NSFW Gamer Podcast Episode 7

With the PlayStation 4 launching in about a week and the XBox One shortly after, Jeff and I decided to look back at the PS3 and Xbox 360’s catalog and pick our favorite games from the current generation.

We also talk about our biggest disappointments of this generation (people that know me can probably guess what my number one letdown was lol), plus other gaming news from this week.

Do you agree or disagree with our list? Did we miss a game or two? Leave a comment below and let us know.

    Batman: Arkham City plat righ’chere!

I really liked RE5. I played that with my best friend, and it was his first real experience with an RE game. We had a blast. I remember going through the one swamp and I had to wade through the water to get something while dealing with crocs. I had my dude stand watch with a sniper cause he’s good like that. The first time a croc came out of nowhere and ate me, I screamed like a girl. High pitched and everything. It really got me good.

And Geist, screw you for only letting us pick 3 games as our favs of this gen, because there are just so many to pick from. I can’t believe now that I forgot about Fallout 3. That’s one of my favorite RPGs along with Dragon’s Dogma.

Also, I’ll admit, I got all fan girl happy when you read off my comments.

I’m trying to get my comments written down while I listen to the podcast so I don’t forget them later, so I apologise for multiple posts.

Anyway, I think I know why Uncharted 3 wasn’t as good as it seems like it should have been. It jumps from setting to setting too much. You don’t spend much time in any one place to really get a feel for it. It’s rather jarring and takes away some of the immersion. The flashbacks were great though. Seeing a young Drake and a younger Sully first meet each other and how they came to be friends was just a great idea.

#thatakwardmoment when you wish you were a chick so you could say “I’d let Corey play with my controller” without sounding weird…

Thanks for the review nod 😀

Long show here. I’ve listened to a few, but I normally only get about 40 mins in, till I gotta run off to work or grab a bite. Luckily this time I sat down after a bowl of cereal.

Covering a generation of games is a big topic, and this gen was longer then most. I was predominantly on the other side this gen. Got the 360 when it launched. Got the PS3 3 years later, when I needed a bluray player, figured I’d get access to their exclusives as well as a bluray so yeah, why not.

The best of the generation, well for me –

Mass Effect 1- It was the 1st title that I played where I felt yeah this is unlike anything else. With the voice acting and the facial animation. It also set a standard for RPGs, no longer did you have to read a wall of text, or have your character be a voiceless presence. From this point on, I felt, this is how all RPGs should be from here on out. The characters in the game mattered, your character mattered. Now the first game had a few hiccups and the combat is not nearly as smooth as it is in the later games. But for me, it had thee best story. Had good villains, had good revelations, and it had a good drive. The 2nd game had great characters, villains?, revelations? oh the bugs were once Prothean. But they started off by killing your character!? Granted it was an awesome setup. But what? Personally I thought this was the weakest part of the franchise. But I’ll leave it there, personally I thought the 1st game was the best. I could write a book about the trilogy, but I’ve already said too much.

Halo : Reach. The original Halo was excellent. But the 2nd game… really dropped the ball on the core story, the badass elites were replaced by space gorillas. The multiplayer was fine throughout. But I enjoyed the original the most, cause I had a bunch of lan parties with 12-16 players. Reach was Bungie’s swan song for the series, and I thought it was a fitting note. They finally used mo-cap. Everything they put into it was good, creating your own spartan, going through the campaign with said character. Had a bit of an RPG progression with that. And it had firefight, which for me is key. Now I gotta have a good co-op fix. Adversarial is fine. But honestly none of my friends will play me on any fighting game… cause I’ll skunk em’. But bust out the co-op and it’s all good. That’s why I love BL2 so much. But yeah, I had to give the last Halo game a little shout out. I might get rocks thrown at me, but Halo 4… meh. Excellent graphics, excellent score. But the villain, and the new story arc is poo. I also didn’t care for the new designs, Chief now has bitch hips. And they need to give the man a rest. They have a decent universe – expand on it.

The Last of Us – Total surprise for me, granted I know Naughty Dog has a good wrap, but wow. Uncharted was fine, better production and whatnot then Tomb Raider, but for me it was and always will be Tomb Raider with a cock. I wasn’t looking forward to this title at all, I had given it pass for numerous reasons – one zombies… with all the zombie stuff as of lately… it’s such a tired subject, and two I really don’t care for survival horror. But a friend brought the game over the day it came out, after that 1st 15 minutes, I had to get it myself. Excellent story, good spin on creatures- cause it’s an infection. They are reanimated from the dead, so for me it worked. But yeah the game really did everything right. The characters are amazing, i didn’t find anything cheesy about any of the lines (which is tricky when bringing a youth into the story). But they nailed it. I thought this game was far better then Uncharted. And for that sole reason, I hope Naughty Dog’s next endeavor is something completely fresh and new. On top of all that, they weren’t afraid to bridge things out, there’s down time, there’s these big vast sections where you just take in the scenery. I also like the light stealth bits, cause it works well for the whole survival bit. But yeah, I hope they do get the GOTY for this one.

I might need to do two notes here… don’t know what the cap is on this.

  5. Bloodfart says:

I’ll dabble on the disappointments now.

When they revealed The Last Guardian, that was the point I said to myself, F’I gotta get a PS3 now. Sure enough I got one. But yeah, just a real sad situation. Loved Ico & Shadow of the Colossus (even got the HD ones as well). But yeah… not having team Ico’s charm cross over to this gen…. reeeal shame.

Gran Turismo 5. Another game that when I snatched up a PS3, I thought was gonna just blow my mind. Well it did, but for all the wrong reasons. I got the PS3 rather late in the cycle, roughly 2 and a half years in, and when I did, naturally I looked to all the goods that it could provide, GT on PS2, whether you liked it or not, had thee best graphics for a racing game around. Polyphony nabbed it, and good. But then came the wait, I had to wait a good year till it rolled out. After a rather gross delay, the game finally came out. And when I popped it in, I was introduced to… HD PS2 car models…. Yikes. Another game I could write a book about. 5 years in the cooker, and they roll out a half finished game. Not only that the game design suffered as well. This game feels like a dinosaur. We’ll see if they change that in GT6. But I’ll wait till that one’s in the bargain to give it a whirl (if I even bother).

Lost Planet 2 is on my sad list too. Played the demo with 4 buddies, prior to it’s release. We grabbed a mech, that one person piloted, and the other two manned the shoulder mounted gatling guns. Taking a huge boss, and it really felt like a group effort. This was gonna be one of the top co-op games around. It was made for it. Now the game wasn’t complete poo, but it miss it’s mark in a multitude of ways. One they got stingy with the mechs, very stingy. Real shame too, cause the mechs were the best part. Turn up the difficulty, they removed the mechs entirely. I did log a decent amount of time into though. So… I guess in that regard I can’t complain too much. But that is always the situation though, when a game has so much potential and it misses… that’s what makes it a letdown.

On to next gen. Well off the bat, there isn’t a giant difference out of the gate. If you’re hopping on and getting any of the top shooters, either console has you covered. And for the big titles, it seems each is starting with a similar amount of hot exclusives. But I think like the previous generation, the real goods won’t roll out till that one year mark. I was setting my sights on Forza 5. But with the car total, and track total… I’m a bit gutted. I’m also not looking forward to DLC prices going up, while the content stays roughly the same. Maybe I’m just becoming a bit more of a tight wad.

I will say this, I really do hope the companies are properly ready for this round. I don’t wanna deal with any faulty bizness on either side.

Oh and thanks for the shout out at the end of the podcast there. I was plotting a -Tan image with both companies in a face off of sorts. Basically two fembots wrasslin’. Didn’t wanna catch the whole fan boy flack though. Ours is better, you’re an idiot. blah blah blah. That’s another thing we can look forward too next gen, people on the net getting more intolerable.

P.S. if I do finish that image I will kaboot it your way as an exclusive. Could go with a launch article, perhaps?

@Noah – Hahahah don’t worry, I screamed like a girl too when the croc jumped out the first time. Thanks for leaving the comment so I could read it on the podcast. Sorry I had to keep it to 3 otherwise I figured it would take too long to read them all

  7. Geist01 says:

    @DevilSugar – Lol

  8. Geist01 says:

@Bloodfart – I think a face off image would be great for the site. I don’t have any launch articles currently planned (Anystrom0 is working on a two part retrospective piece similar) but you know I’ll feature it regardless.

Too bad we didn’t have you on the podcast to talk about Halo: Reach. We need a non-Sony fanboy in the mix somewhere lol

  9. Noah says:

    lol It’s cool Geist.
