Mortal Kombat is one of the most storied franchises in all of video game history, and the blonde hottie Sonya Blade is one of the constants throughout the series. She’s changed a lot since her debut in the original game though.
Here we take a look at a Mortal Kombat original throughout the last 20+ years. I’ll stick to the console releases and movies that she appears in. I also won’t be getting too far into any of her back story. This is strictly about looks and sex appeal.
Objectification at its finest.
Mortal Kombat (1992)
In the original Mortal Kombat, Sonya is introduced as a second-generation U.S. Special Forces officer. She is the epitome of a strong, independent woman. At first anyway, she isn’t all tits and ass. She looks simple in her original outfit that still leaves a lot to the imagination, but I think that’s more about graphical limitations of the era than anything else. 1992 was such a simple time wasn’t it? I never played much as her because even at a young age, I was apparently a staunch misogynist. On a side note, I was kind of an all-around weird little kid.
Mortal Kombat II (1993)
In Mortal Kombat II, Sonya and Kano are the only playable characters from the first game who were not implemented as regular fighters in the sequel, though they do appear in the background of the Kahn’s Arena stage. They’re both chained up and on display as his prisoners. She looks quite similar this time around, which is understandable considering she’s only window dressing in a stage background. I played the shit out of this game at a friend’s house on Sega Genesis. I really didn’t like that kid.
Mortal Kombat 3 (1995)
Sonya got a face, and body, lift for Mortal Kombat 3. It looks as if she may have gotten a Crossfit membership in between her tournament appearances as well. You couldn’t get spandex any tighter than this if you tried. Even though she kept her trademark green outfit, she takes a step or two in the sexy direction. This version of Sonya reminds me a lot of the Kristy Swanson from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie here.
Mortal Kombat (1995)
Now we’re in the real world. 1995’s Mortal Kombat is one of the few really good video game movies, especially in the 90s. Sonya Blade, played by Bridgette Wilson, is one of the main characters in this film. I will personally always know Mrs. Wilson as three things: the legendary tennis player Pete Sampras’ wife, the hot teacher from Billy Madison, and the cute as a button, blonde airhead in Saved by the Bell. I still don’t know why she never became a bigger star. Maybe Pete keeps her on lockdown, who knows. Either way, she’s hot as hell.
Mortal Kombat: Annilation (1997)
Mortal Kombat: Annilation, changes up the actress to my dismay. This time around Sonya is portrayed by Sandra Hess, whose body of work is not nearly as impressive as her actual body. You may know her from, well, nothing…you know her from nothing. Even so, in a passable sequel, she does an adequate job kicking some Outworld ass. Also, you get to see down her shirt.
Mortal Kombat 4 (1997)
Along comes Mortal Kombat 4, which is the first foray into the 3rd dimension for the franchise. Just look at all that polygonal glory. Sonya’s gone with a more down-to-work approach here with a baseball cap, pony tail, and utility belt. It’s like the first half hour of She’s All That. Also she wears some sort of ammo belt around her thigh. Wouldn’t that just fall off when she walks, or y’know, does anything? Anyway, she looks good, but I’d be afraid of those sharp texture edges, just saying.
Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance (2002)
In Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, Sonya Blade is back and looks quite different. In last installment she seemed more interested in business, and in this one she wants to get down to business. See what I did there? Eh forget it. I assume she’s wearing a white t-shirt, but it could also be latex paint. I’m not sure. Maybe there’s a secret fatality that just drives the opponent insane trying not to stare at those titties. Also, in 2002, pulling thongs way out of your pants was all the rage, not that I minded at the time. Just ask Sisqo.
Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks (2005)
Ms. Blade looks sexy in 2005’s Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks with fatigued pants, a thong still poking out, and a somehow see-through black half shirt. I’ve personally never been in the armed forces, but something tells me this isn’t a standard military issue outfit.
Mortal Kombat: Armageddon (2006)
There’s not much to say about the Sonya Blade that appears in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. Her character model is almost identical to the one in Deadly Alliance. It looks technologically superior, but I’d hope so after a few years. More of the same sexy goodness I suppose.
Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe (2008)
Now for the hyped crossover that was Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. Sonya’s role in this game can be summed up in one word. Tits. I could really stop there. I assume the production meeting was just someone screaming for her to be topless. Then someone else telling that guy calmly that they just can’t do that. So they settled on a tight, see-through, white sports bra. Who says people can’t compromise? We’re to the point now where graphically, it’s getting a little uncomfortable how attractive she is.
Mortal Kombat 9 (2011)
And last, but not least, Mortal Kombat 9 (or Mortal Kombat 2011). In a reboot for the franchise, and the first not done by Midway, Sonya is just full on hot. Showing as much as you can without it being considered nudity, she’s back to re-jumpstart the series all over again. I guess we’ll just have to see what comes next…
