If I had been paying attention to Scarlet Blade during its beta period I would have probably jumped onto one of the pre-release founder’s packs.
What was suspected to be nothing more than a substandard MMO with an abundance of tits is actually a unique and cheeky free-to-play experience. While the game makes no attempt to hide the adult factor; the game system is actually solid and keeps the player going with constant action.
The plot centers around Earth being devastated by an alien attack that forces the survivors underground where they turn to cloning to produce a new warrior caste to retake the surface. Luckily for gamers like me the process seems to work best with females and thus the Arkana is born. As a result the world is mostly populated by every type of anime babe you can think of. While there are some generic male enemies and select significant NPCs, most of who you will be fighting and conversing with will be a scantily clad female.
You choose an archtype, which basically comes down to choosing traditional MMO roles such as rouge, tank, healer, and DPS. What makes the classes unique is the game’s style. Your crowd control class takes the form of the whipper; a dominatrix with a serrated sword that pays homage to Ivy of Soul Calibur fame. The sentinal, your enfeebler, is a nubile loli sporting twin handguns while the medic class resembles a character from the anime Oh! My Goddess!
The free-to-play model in use gives you full access to the game including vehicles, PVP, all available character levels, and giant mecha-armor…yeah that’s right..you eventually get the ability to outfit your character with her own robot exoskeleton. The only thing you have to pay for (if you choose to do so) is vanity outfits, buffs, and the ability to remove your character’s default lingerie and replace it with something sexier or nothing at all. There is equipment for sale with real money, but it comes in the form of chests with random items so there is no guarantee that attempting the pay-to-win route will yield you the tools you need to dominate.
The gameplay maintains a steady pace. Instead of running from questgiver to questgiver the majority of your quests come via radio communications so you can accept them anywhere. My only complaint was that there would be a quest that requires me to kill 5 of a certain enemy which was directly followed by a quest to kill four more of the exact same enemy. Solo play did not seem to be a problem, but I only spent a couple hours with the game so I have no idea if future areas contain challenges that mandate a group.
The sexual aspect of the game is apparent from the very start. All the NPCs, regardless of gender, constantly flirt with your avatar. Due to the fact that the game places the player as the mission controller of your created character she will also directly flirt with you over the course of the story. Sadly I did not get a chance to try out the lingerie remover doing my time due to issues with my account. Even without having that aspect unlocked I saw lots of racy armor styles in use.
What is unique about Scarlet Blade is while the sexual innuendo is non-stop it never comes off as too much. The reason being is that the story and gameplay is not based on the sexuality. There were no quests centered around getting my avatar a new sexy outfit or engaging in some sexual act masquerading as an NPC request. Yes this game is not for everyone but those that take an interest might be surprised to find among the flirting and lingerie an in-depth skill system, strong class mechanics, and even a deep pet system that requires constant attention.
I barely scratched the surface of Scarlet Blade but I saw enough to recommend it. The graphics and gameplay are more than worth the free admission.
