Realistic TMNT Portraits by Dave Rapoza

Realistic Classic TMNT Portraits by Dave Rapoza

Michael Bay’s new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie is finally here and, well, I could care less. I’m sure I’ll watch it at some point, but seeing as how all the reviews I’ve read so far have been pretty mediocre, I’m in no hurry to see it opening weekend (I’ll probably just see Guardians of the Galaxy again).

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not that I’m not a fan of TMNT or anything. Quite the opposite actually- I love the Turtles! I grew up reading the original comics and was a big fan the 1990 film as a kid (it still holds up pretty well today), but my all-time favorite version has to be Nickelodeon’s TMNT cartoon that’s currently airing. If you aren’t watching it you’re missing out on one of the best shows on TV.

Needless to say, I dig Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles…I just don’t dig Michael Bay’s version of them. I can’t stand the way they look. The production team should’ve gone with Dave Rapoza’s ultra-realistic designs of the classic characters. Unlike the person that designed the current film incarnation, he managed to not make them look creepy as shit. Don’t just take my word for it, check out the portrait gallery below. Just be forewarned: You’ll be less excited about the new movie after doing so (if that’s even possible).

I had seen the turtles he had done, but not all of these. Good lawd, he covered just about all of em’.

Funny thing is, when I had seen some stuff on the new flick, I was thinking about this artist’s renditions. There’s things about the film’s design that I just can’t get over. Mikey’s fatass bitch lips. The only one that seemed remotely on point was/is Donatello. But yeah, watched the trailers a few times… and I just can’t muster enough interest to bother.

I just got the original trilogy on bluray. And I still love the 1st film. So yeah, I’ll just roll with that.

That said, if they did make stuff akin to Mr. Rapoza’s art here, I’d shut up and watch the film.

@Bloodfart – Yea, the lips are what really throws me off too. They just look odd. Are you watching the Nickelodeon cartoon?

  3. DevilSugar says:

Well, fuck me, Baxter Stockman, thanks for the nightmare fuel.

I’m going with some friends to see it tomorrow at the cheaper early show. What I do like about it so far is that they’ve got a little more unique identity than just mask color. Don’s goggles and headpiece and Raph’s doo-rag are nice little touches.

As for the show, I’ll have to check it out after I finish Breaking Bad and Batman Beyond. That way I can rotate in Mad Men and Turtles and be all caught up at last.

@DevilSugar – I agree. The only thing I like about it is their different costumes

WTf Baxter Stockman looks like the creature from “The Fly” movie!!!
