Fans of Heavy Rain can rejoice as Quantic Dreams has finally announced a follow-up project. Beyond: Two Souls brings more of the cinematic gaming experience to the PlayStation 3.
The games made by Quantic Dreams border more on the side of interactive movies than anything else. So it just makes sense that the developer would start using A-list actors and actresses as the stars. Beyond will feature Ellen Page from Juno fame as the protagonist with telekinetic powers.

Early details about the game have been sparse, but so far it’s been mentioned that the plot will deal with the theory of what happens after you die. In the announcement trailer, you see Ellen’s character being chased by SWAT and using her powers to fight back. At two points she speaks to a disembodied character visible only to her. The sub title “Two Souls” implies the concept of two entities inhabiting one body, perhaps the source of her powers and the hunt for her.
Gamers who remember Fahrenheit: Indigo Prophecy know that the developer has experience with supernatural plots. The real question is, will this game garnish more than a one time play through? I was a fan of Heavy Rain and Fahrenheit for the production qualities and adult themes alone, but once the story was over, there wasn’t much reason to go re-live it. It reminds me of the old interactive games of my youth, Dragon’s Lair and Space Ace to be exact. They were great experiences, but once you learned the path and got the timing down pat, the game might as well have been on auto-pilot. The concept of telekinetic powers could be the answer to giving the game replay value and more of an appeal to traditional gamers provided that the gamer is given freedom in their use.
I’ll keep Beyond: Two Souls on my radar, and hopefully future info will increase my desire. Heavy Rain was notable for full frontal nudity of the female protagonist. I’ll preorder this in a heart beat if they say an Ellen Page topless scene is included.
