NSFW Gamer’s Interview With Paul Trowe

NSFW Gamer's Interview With Paul Trowe

Replay Games successfully released Leisure Suit Larry back into the modern gaming world thanks to Kickstarter and loving fans.

Playing through and reviewing Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded left me curious about what the future has in store for Larry Laffer and some of the work that went into the reboot. Luckily, NSFW Gamer got a chance to interview the president of Replay Games, Paul Trowe. Paul is a veteran of the gaming industry and gave us some insight as to what we can expect for Larry in the future.

NSFW Gamer: How did the idea to revitalize the Leisure Suit Larry franchise come about?

Paul Trowe: I’ve been trying to acquire the rights to any of the Sierra games I worked on as a kid all the way through college and beyond. After the company was sold four or five times over, they weren’t doing anything with the IP so I’ve been trying to license any of the games and bring the team back together that designed them. I was lucky in that the Leisure Suit Larry franchise had been sold to Codemasters, and a friend of mine just happens to be the CEO.

Did Al Lowe approach you or did you seek him out? What was the experience like with him involved?

I’ve known Al since I was a teenager beta testing various games he’s designed and programmed like Police Quest, King’s Quest, and of course, Leisure Suit Larry. When I got the rights from Codemasters I first called up Al and said, “hey, wanna get the band back together?” It was one of the most memorable occasions of my life so far.

I know a lot of Kickstarter supporters got their copies of the game for free. What have the reception and sales been like since the official release?

So far we’ve only been able to release on PC/MAC/Linux as well as Steam, GOG, and all the other portals. I’m not allowed to give out numbers, but I can tell you this, I think we’ll have enough to make a Leisure Suit Larry 2!!!

We’ve been in Apple’s iOS approval process now for 3 weeks and counting. And if the Android market wasn’t so damn fragmented, we’d already have that version out but we’re still in QA as I write this on 7/12/13.

Some of the significant puzzles in the game were changed to reflect modern game design and provide new challenge for veterans of the series. How was it decided which puzzles to change? Where you worried that purists would react negatively to this?

I don’t have a creative bone in my body. Well, maybe a small one in my left pinky toe, but I left all the creativity to Al and Josh. Together, giving the game 100% of their love and passion, I was quite happy the way it’s turned out. Even Al’s said it’s the best Leisure Suit Larry game that’s ever been produced. That’s really saying something and I’m very humbled to just be part of it.

The series has always been known more for sexual innuendo then hardcore sex. Do you think gamers will still find that aspect of the game appealing or do you feel that modern gamers demand more graphic adult content?

We’ve gotten a bunch of reviews back both from gaming sites and players. I think it’s interesting to see that the gaming sites all gave it poor ratings but all the users gave it 8-10’s. I’m not surprised, because honestly, when you look at these gaming review sites, they all want to see the next Call of Duty, or Battlefield. They were told to write the review from their Editor In Chief and I think since many of them never liked adventure games (the guy from GameSpot even admitted it), the scores on those sites suffered. But like I said, the gamer reviews have been amazing, the sales have been amazing, and I honestly couldn’t be happier than where we are today.

What are the future plans for the franchise? Does Replay Games have the rights and intent to reboot the other games in the series? Al Lowe has mentioned in interviews that he would like to go ahead with Larry 8–is that a possibility?

Every single member on our team wants to do a Larry 8, including Al and myself. BUT, since we were so young back in the 80s, and really didn’t know much about game design, there’s a lot to fix in those sequels so I think the current plan (as of today, that is), is to remake the entire franchise and then bring out #8 as sort of a crescendo, if you will.

Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded

I am excited to hear that reboots of all the Larry games are in the planning. It seems the franchise is back in the hands of developers who really care for the series and will keep it true to its roots. I will be looking forward to what Replay Games has in mind for modernizing Passionate Patti and if they will find a new way to address the fact that Larry 4 does not exist!
