NSFW Gamer’s Artist Spotlight – Aedollon

NSFW Gamer’s Artist Spotlight – Aedollon

It’s my humble opinion that anybody who’s into hentai should know the name Aedollon.

An artist whose work truly speaks for itself, he’s a mainstay of Hentai Foundry’s Featured Pictures section on the front page, as well as having his work posted not only on NSFW Gamer but MPL Toons as well. Every piece of his is vibrant and gorgeously colored, and yet still it’s gloriously erotic hentai.

Ladies and gentlemen, you chose him, here he is- your first artist spotlight of 2014, Aedollon!

NSFW Gamer: Please tell us a little about yourself
Aedollon: I think I could sum it up as a contradictory phenomenon between a nervous perfectionist with a short attention span that drink too much coffee and someone who enjoy taking his time to do things well.

I started as a concept-artist at 17 for a company specialized in 35mm table wargame miniatures, such as Warhammer, to eventually continue as a freelancer. It is by working for the first time in a fantasy-related universe that I discovered many talented partners, influences, and instructors as well as subjects for the pieces I still do today, fantasy always being part of my canvas.

I’ve explored a wide array of artistic spheres over years, dabbling in tattoo-art, 2D animation, concept-art, comic book illustration, storyboarding, and a few others. Every substitutes of illustration was an avenue to consider as a young freelancer.

But in the end, filling a whole white page with heavy composition always came back as one as my favorite hobby.

I’ve never really been to art school either, but I did educate myself in art with many instructors and aspirant artists, which I owe a lot to, today.

Who are your favorite artists?
As a french Canadian from Quebec, I have been influenced both by two distant waves of styles from European and American artists (basically because I could only read french comics when I was young!).

I’ve a lot of respect for pin-up artists such as Édouard Guiton, and Alessandro Barbucci for their swift and determined curves, the dynamism on their subjects and the expression conveyed trough their characters. On the other hands, David Finch and Paolo Pantalena for their remarkable attention to details in their linework.

How would you describe your style?
An endless conflict between my two schools of influences. I’ve truly not yet settled myself on one, and tough sometimes people talk of style, I’ve truly no idea what mine is made of.

I like both expressive and dynamic figures and curvy pin-ups as well as a great attention to detail. I’d say its oriented toward a very classical American cutting edge comic style, with the exception that I don’t like the archetype of the American comic book heroes and heroines, I enjoy a great variety of silhouettes.

Are your illustrations 100% digital or do you use traditional techniques as well?
I came to learn to reproduce everything a pencil could do traditionally, digitally, trough Corel Painter’s wide palette of mediums. Since, I only use it I let my pencils gather dust. Most of all, I find scanners outrageously ugly inventions for unknown reasons…

When working on a commissioned piece do you find it hard to work within a genre you are not personally interested in?
Not at all, since I’m having a long and strict list of conditions that make sure I instantly filter out all people I don’t want to work with to be sure I only work with the best!

Do you work when you are inspired or do you have a set schedule?
It usually kicks in after the 3-4 coffees, following a vial of ginseng, providing I’m happy about how my first PvP games in Guildwars 2 went. It takes a bit of moving lights, a few loud songs from my winamp, and my brain buzzing of the mix of roots extracts and espresso to put myself in the state of production. Sometime, I just spend 3-4 days without working and I don’t stress myself with it either, other times I can work 16 hours straight.

It feels incredibly great to be free about what you chose to do, I couldn’t do anything else.

Who is your favorite character to draw?
I’ve got my own personal cast of characters I love drawing over and over since now near 5 years now. I love designing new costumes, changing the silhouettes, the haircuts or adding crazy props. But I enjoy giving a try at drawing characters from video games from time to time when a commission shows up for it. I’m mostly into pin-ups. As long they got curves and meat, I’m happy.

Are there any characters that you want to draw but haven’t had a chance to yet?
I’d really enjoy an interpretation of Noah, from Skydoll, or Tankgirl.

What advice would you give aspiring hentai artists?
Eroticism is primordial. To push more into the erotic potential of a picture rather than its pornographic/fetishy value is something very important if you really want to go hentai in the long run. Learn to convey eroticism through expressions (the hands, feet, visage), through the subtle choice of angles, costumes, backgrounds, colors and ambiances.

Tease. The subconscious is the most powerful tool available to pin-up artists and letting people meet you half-way through their own interpretation is something that will make them look over and over at your pieces. Never make it too easy to them.

That way, it both asks you to stay creative and keep your right brain working and you personally doesn’t become a heartless beast without humanity that just ”fetishizes” everything. It can be quite dehumanizing to stay in pornography without a bit of fantasy for too long and you might hit a few ”art blocks” that way.
