NSFW Gamergasm - Ubisoft and Watch Dogs

Seeing that this is a huge hot button issue at the moment, it’s time for Lexxx to speak out. I have opinions on this whole Ubisoft and Watch Dogs fiasco that people may not like. I expect it. I welcome discussion so please let me have it. I will respond to all of the comments I can. All of that being said– I’m back in the game and I have opinions to share!

Watch Dogs.

This game is synonymous with hype. In fact, there was so much hype that even I, with my tiny little wallet, was ready for release day to shell out all the money for the full price game. The mechanics were solid, the game play pics were epic, everyone (including me) was bloody stoked. Some of us are still lucky enough to be riding that wave- If you are, don’t let this rattle you too much.

I have a deep love for the city of Chicago. I do a lot of business there and the prospect of seeing the actual city that I love come to life in a video game was something I was SO THOROUGHLY STOKED ABOUT that I almost annoyed everyone I spoke to about it. In fact, the guild that I run in World of Warcraft eventually told me to stop talking about it. It became “Oh flying spaghetti monster– Lexxx is talking about Chicago in that game again.”

I bought into the hype.

I was ready to just start screaming “take my money now” the moment it came out, especially after seeing the E3 footage. Then…I got my copy…and I spent about twenty minutes having a huge “What the fuck” moment. You could watch the internet slowly losing it’s mind. I took to steam to see if I was the only person having this kind of problem and I saw this.

As you all know, I am a PC gamer primarily. My experience with this game is ONLY on the PC, I have yet to play through it on a next gen console, but I have a machine that is able to run things VERY WELL. Like…Face melting well…because I take my gaming super srs…and I wanted to make the investment.

I saw the E3 footage of what the PC version looked like and I was psyched. Then, I got it home. I opened it…I did everything I need to do to play my heart out…and I got this. This video is a side by side comparison of what the E3 footage was for the PC and what we actually got.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard so many fanboys cry tears of happiness at seeing those beautiful, HD, 1080p worthy graphics. And then just all collectively scream out in exasperation. You can literally TASTE the nerd rage. And I hate to be one to point out the issues here, but the side by side says it all.

I did hear the outcries on the internet. All at once…a million souls cried out. Dumb AI, dismal characters, an UNLIKEABLE MAIN PROTAGONIST (in my opinion), as a writer, Watch Dogs was lacking a storyline. And then there were the graphics…oh the graphics. The complaints go one and on and on…

Now, I can fully understand dimming down graphics from E3. It’s happened with other triple-A titles before due to computer-console restraints. But with the next-gen systems? We’ve seen what they can put out. I’ve played Killzone: Shadow Fall on PS4, I’ve seen the stylized beauty of GTA V on an Xbox One. I know what those systems can juice out. The graphics reduction on the new next-gen systems is absolutely disgusting.

Developers have made blunders like this in the last four years with major triple-A titles. Assassin’s Creed 3 (whether or not we want to remember it) was absolutely dismal, Duke Nukem Forever was more traumatizing than Batman and Robin, Aliens: Colonial Marines, and more.

Massive game hype is becoming synonymous with sub-par games. With Watch Dogs in particular, we were lied to; there was no press release that the graphics would be changed (and by E3, the graphics and displays should already be done and floor ready).

Furthermore, it was just disappointing for all the hype it received. Perhaps that’s the problem these days, that major game developers are over-hyping to compensate for the lack of sales otherwise. A new indie game out right now, Among the Sleep, was not overly hyped up, but it is a FANTASTIC game; the story is gorgeous, the voice acting is superb, and the graphical design is beautiful. Really, really, spine shaking beautiful.

Watch Dogs? Sub par rendition of Chicago (again, in my opinion), altered graphics, and a new patch went live a week or so ago to enable mods. What? In this day and age, that wasn’t a feature immediately?

While it brings us an interesting mechanic, reactive and deep NPCs, and a potential for a very good sequel (I’d like someone other than the studio Ubisoft designated to handle it), these continuing issues make me a shaky buyer in the future; I’m not shelling out my coin for a game where the most beautiful feature is changed just before release.

Now, to what I liked about the game: The side quests were amazing in many ways. The concept in and of itself is absolutely amazing. And the hacking system. Oh dear god the hacking system. It took these sandbox games to a level that they needed to go for environmental development and stimulation for the player. I think that what they tried to do was absolutely amazing. If you didn’t see the E3 footage, and bought the game, you likely have a very different opinion of it. Most of the people who bought the game and played through it without really paying attention to the internet exploding seem to have enjoyed it. So don’t let this sway you from something that could be a really awesome experience.

What were your opinions on this game? Did you love it, Did you hate it, Did you love/hate it? Talk to me. Tell me what you think. I’d love to hear from all of you.

My big issue started with Ubisoft when they gave Patrice Desilets the same treatment West/ Zampella got from Activision. However, unlike Activision, I haven’t seen anything to forgive them for their sins. Getting rid of a top-level employee is one thing, but putting his game on hold rather than cancelling it so he can have the rights to the IP again is ridiculous. And today they continue to feed us bullshit about the Assassin’s Creed Unity protagonist not being able to be customized beyond a white male because of “time and budget constraints.” When Watch Dogs is your fastest-selling title to date and you’re talking about your cash cow franchise, I think we deserve a little honesty that you were just too lazy. And don’t even get me started on their holding Beyond Good and Evil 2 with their promise of “Well, if this game does well enough, we’ll release it.” Just cancel the project and stop offering false hope.

I think the main problem with this game is the story and the characters, other than that it’s pretty much your typical sandbox open world game with not much to do once you finish the main story.

GTA V is pretty much the same game minus the hacking gimmick, but with an epic story and colorful characters.

I am currently playing saint row 2 and it’s pretty dull. I think in this type of games, the developers need to implement side activities that complement the story instead of making them completely unrelated.

To be honest I felt very unsympathetic towards the MC, which came out as douche who’s criminal past crippled his family and instead of learning from his mistakes, he goes hellbent on a revenge quest only to screw his family even more. And that it’s just the tip of the iceberg regarding flaws in the story and the characters.

This was an excellent read! I’m so glad I found this article BEFORE I laied down my cash for this game. I guess I’ll wait till some cool mods are made for the PC version and THEN buy it. Thanks Lexxx!

  4. Calithos says:

Not to mention, The Worse from Guru 3D found all those settings and sliders that proved Ubisoft downgraded for consoles without checking to see if they set it back up for PCs. AND they kept saying “We did nothing of the sort.” despite clear evidence pointing towards this. If the modders themselves had modded the game to simply allow higher numbers past the normal parameter, that would be one thing, but when they’re not even brute forcing the numbers, but flipping a switch Ubisoft themselves put in, that’s telling us Ubisoft dropped the ball. I don’t think they realize how much it would help if they admit “Yes we messed up, and we will patch it for PCs. The downgrades for console are obviously meant for console” as even the most recent console is still two generations behind the most current PC spec.

  5. Sirithil says:

I think the hype is a lot of the problem here. I’ve seen it time and time again where a studio builds up the hype around a game to such an extent that there is no conceivable way the finished product can live up to it, even if the game itself is pretty good. The graphics deception aside (Ubisoft should have told gamers it wasn’t going to live up to E3 and why, but they didn’t), Watchdogs would’ve gone over a lot better if they’d sold it as ‘basically GTA except you can hack all of the things’ instead of the ‘ERMAHGEERRD THIS IS THE GAMERGASM OF WHICH SONGS WILL BE SUNG FOR GENERATIONS’ pitch we actually got. Day one sales might not have been as high, sure, but overall sales might have been stronger, and the reaction certainly would have been better.

@Devil Sugar – EXACTLY. I think that as someone who spends money on this game, I deserve to know what I am getting. Adding insult to injury – finding out that the code was in there hidden the whole time is unacceptable.

@Trevor – As a writer, I agree completely about the whole main character set up. I had so little sympathy for the dude…I was unable to connect to him and for me – that’s a HUGE part of the game play in these kinds of games. I completely agree with your observations for developers on these kinds of Sandbox games.

  7. Lexxx says:

@Zenkitty – Glad I was able to help you with your decision process – but please. Don’t take my word as gospel…A LOT of people have enjoyed this game.

@Calithos – You know – a little bit of an apology always goes a long way. The fact that they are completely giving the people who PAID for this game the middle finger AND assuming that we are stupid is A LOT to swallow in my book.

  8. HolidayWolf says:

I’m here to represent another side. I never climbed aboard this particular hype-mobile. I never saw much appeal for this game. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not “I told you so” ing this, either. I could see why there would be other who would want to play this but for me personally the “shoot and use a cell phone to hack stuff” wasn’t in my aesthetic.

I did pay attention when a certain news Op/ed host from a certain news op/ed cable tv channel claimed this game would teach people how to hack, but that was as far as it went.

But I think this is more than just this game. Its AMD versus NVidia. The corporations behind each are drawing lines in the sand for game developers that are only going to hurt gamers. In uncertain times for many game developers financial incentives and threats make business models more stable, but when games are optimized for specific hardware you’re only punishing people whose only crimes were wanting to play your damn game. Shame on us for wanting to do that.

  9. glcorp says:

a good read, to be honest I never really was on board with this one, just never appealed to me for some reason. Now I will simply avoid it or wait for it to be free on plus.

  10. Lexxx says:

@Siri – I think that was another big issue I had. The Hype. Your observations are ABSOLUTELY accurate from my P.O.V. – and I think that if they had told me that I likely would have bought it and enjoyed it more.

@Holiday Wolf – You know – you raised a point here that I had not thought about and how it will hurt gamers as a whole and as much as I would like to say “Oh…That can’t be…” It absolutely seems like it could and that is an angle that we all need to think about.

@GLCORP – Yes. Wait for a sale or wait for someone to gift it. If you approach it like that, you may be able to enjoy it more

  11. Musical Anti Hero says:

Excellent insight! I’ve been finding more and more articles on this lately, as well as the trending poor results of AAA Titles. Excellent read!

  12. Lexxx says:

@MuSIAh – it does seem a disturbing trend hmmm?

  13. DevilSugar says:

First, a big welcome to all our new readers- thank you for stopping by and engaging in the commentary! We always love new faces here at NSFW Gamer.

@Calithos- Ubisoft has a history of never admitting any wrongdoing. They would rather take a stance of avoidance whenever there’s a controversy and leave everyone in the dark. See the way they fumbled around when discussions if the new Far Cry 4 was racist for a good example. It’s really pathetic.

@Lexxx- Seriously? The tools are already there? This is flat-out maddening. I need to find some Ubisoft forums to hammer the points home.

  14. caligulove says:

well i preorderd being half as stoked about the game as everyone else was (pc user) i have had 0 issues with video and over all had no issues anyone was talking about at all on poor fps – nvidia 670 4gb vid card here not even a great one

liked the story so far (its not great but we have seen everything nearly now days so not many games will be that great and simply most are not) no time with work to finnish it yet

honestly only complaint is the requirement of uplay i just dont like that i buy it on steam and then a 2nd lessor copy of steam is required as well its redundant honestly

i knew graphics would be reduced the game is on every system 360 ps3 xbone ps4 pc they had to do something to make things look decent accross all systems and for pc at some point some one would release a mod or sweet fx/Enb to make things look even better then the e3 one ever could its just what happens with everything now days till 360 and ps3 are phased out were not gonna get the most amazing everything for the systems unless they are exclusive to that system

  15. Lexxx says:

@caliuglove – I am actually really glad that you are enjoying your gaming experience with it. I really am. Please, let me know if it keeeps up ok? I’d love to hear the experience of someone who is having a better time with it.
