NSFW Gamergasm – The Year of ‘Meh’

The Year of 'Meh'

I can recall a few years ago, when I worked for a certain video game retailer, that I would start to pre-order all of my big Christmas games right after E3. I can even recall a year where I had not less than 35 games on order to buy.

While that year was unusually loaded, I can rarely recall a year where I was stoked for less than 10 games that were going to hit by Christmas time. Granted, I did not always get all the titles I had ordered due to funds or other reasons but the fact remains, I was always super excited for these games.

Now with the 2012 holiday season looming just around the corner I am asking myself…Where are the must-have games?

As I look over all of the 2012 holiday releases I realize that, while there are a few gems here and there, for the most part I am taking a pass on them. I have one game left on reserve as of the writing of this and it is only a few weeks out. That game is of course Borderlands 2. I was a fan of the first, won’t say a big fan but a fan none the less. However after this title drops I am in serious doubts over whether or not I will be purchasing any other titles by years end.

When you look to the big franchises like Halo 4 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, they hold little interest for me. I have played these titles before and honestly I think I am beginning to run thin on them. Call of Duty just looks like it will be broken with the sniper rifle that can shoot through cover and I have just never been a Halo guy (just not my cup o tea).

Why is this though? Why is it that so many games seem to have taken a year off? Honestly I think the answer lies in next gen. I think the main issue is a lot of the developers out there have got their hands on their development kits so they are starting to hold back on their new and innovative ideas until the next consoles hit. This is not all bad as maybe it will lead to a stronger launch of the new systems but it still leaves me with very little to do this year.

Of course what this also means is those next gen consoles are just around the corner. The Wii U is going to launch this year but I find it hard to call the system truly “next gen”. While Randy Pitchford has said the system is going to be the best one to play the upcoming Alien: Colonial Marines on, it is hard for me to believe a system with only slightly better than current gen tech. On top of that, while the new tablet controller looks amazing, the fact that the Wiimote and nunchuck is still going to be a main controller for the system is just a bit of a turn off for me. However the PS4 and Xbox ummm let’s just call it the 720 are, I believe, going to truly be amazing pieces of hardware. Of course they will have more powerful graphics but what I am more interested to see is what kind of extra features they will use to try and prove that one system is surely superior to the other.

But I digress, I want to end this by saying not all hope is lost because there are a few more gems out there this year. Of course there is Assassin’s Creed 3 which looks to be an awesome addition to what has, in my opinion, always been a solid franchise. Plus there is Dishonored – maybe that one title that will come out of the shadows and win a shit ton of Game of the Year awards. There is also Playstation All-Stars which would be much more on my radar if my PS3 had not died on me a few months back.

What I will say for the few games that do look truly appealing this year is that you can tell the developers have really learned how to get just about every drop of power out of the current gen systems. When you look at titles like Hitman or Assassin’s Creed, they look absolutely stunning. They are crisp, clean, and loaded with so much content it is simply amazing what the developers have been able to do with hardware that is now six years old.

Still however I look at this and see 3 games that I am considering buying beyond September and I cannot help but feel just a little sad. This year’s lineup will not be skipped out on because of a lack of funding, but rather because of a very soft set of games hitting the shelves this year.

I really agree with you on the lack of stellar titles this holiday season. I’m definitely getting the AC3 collector’s edition, cause I buy those. I wonder if any of it will actually be worth anything, but fuck it, a lot of them are cool. Also get RE6 at some point, and possibly Dishonored if it’s good. But yeah, I can’t think of anything else I want that’s coming up. Well there is Colonial Marines too I just remembered. Wii U the best console to play it on? Why do I seriously doubt that? All due respect to Randy Pitchford and Gearbox, their games are very hit and miss, despite their enthusiasm for everything they release. I’m really hoping Colonial Marines is good, but I feel the Wii U version being the best is a bit of hyperbole. I have little faith in anything Nintendo anymore, except handhelds.

Anyway, my main point is that despite the lack of games coming, it kind of relieves me. Now can use that money and time to buy games I’ve been wanting but haven’t been able to afford lately. The two biggest are Shadow’s of the Damned and Asura’s Wrath. And their cheaper price points make it even sweeter. So it’s all a bit of a blessing for me this year.

it was the same thing last generation
i remember at the end of the gamecube/ps2/xbox generation that good games to look forward to were scarce. history is just repeating itself. Go explore some indie pc games while you wait for next gen.
