NSFW Gamergasm – My Time At E3 2014

NSFW Gamergasm - My Time At E3 2014

I love E3. It’s one of my favorite times of the year, right up there with Halloween and Christmas. I love all the spectacle and excitement the surrounds the expo and, of course, I love all the big reveals.

While I have attended two E3s in the past, this year marks the first time I was able to go legitimately (I was denied last year because NSFW Gamer’s Alexa rating wasn’t low enough). Believe me when I say, it’s totally worth it.

For those of you that couldn’t make it to E3 this year, I put together a little recap and image gallery for you to enjoy. Feel free to leave a comment below and let me know what you think. As always, sorry I couldn’t get better pics. The only camera I have is my iPhone.

E3 2014 – Day 1

NSFW Gamer

It’s official! This is the first time I’ve ever had my own E3 badge. It was a good thing too because on Wednesday the security guards were checking both IDs and badges.

Here’s what you see when you first get to the Convention Center in Downtown LA- A life sized Titan from Titanfall (or close to life size at least).

Pretty cool even though I still haven’t played the game. There was also an armored vehicle driving around promoting Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, but I wasn’t able to snap a pic. I was much more excited to get inside E3 and check out all the games.

And here’s what I was greeted by as I walked through the main entrance into the South Hall…

To this day, I still don’t know what Evolve is about or what platforms it’s coming out for. That’s bad advertising on their part. If you’re gonna spend that much money on a booth at E3 you better be damn sure you let people know what the deets are. Sure, I could’ve gone up and asked, but once I saw the game footage I moved onto something I actually cared about, Alien Isolation.

NSFW Gamer

I’m a huge Alien fan so of course I’ve had my eyes on Alien Isolation ever since it was first announced. Thankfully I was able to spend some hands-on time with the game and I’m happy to report that it’s looking good. The demo I played was absolutely terrifying (I had to try and not scream out loud when I was playing it). My only concern is how the dev team is going to maintain that level of fear for an entire game with only one antagonist. I’m still not convinced enough to pre-order Alien Isolation (fuck you Aliens: Colonial Marines), but I officially can’t wait for Fall now.

After playing Alien Isolation I moved onto Dying Light by Techland (the makers of Dead Island).

NSFW Gamer

If you played Dead Island then you know what to expect from Dying Light. It’s almost the same damn game just with parkour and better graphics. For those of you that haven’t played Dead Island, this is a very good thing. My two favorite aspects about Dying Light were the x-ray shots of zombies’ bones breaking when you hit them with a heavy weapon and the fact that hitting the air tank on the back of a zombie firefighter will send him sliding across the ground until he explodes. All in all, the 7 minutes I played with Dying Light were a blast.

Also as an added bonus, the Dying Light booth was right next to the Batmobile from Batman: Arkham Knight so I got to stare at that while I waited in line.

Pretty cool huh?

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to check out Batman: Arkham Knight or Mortal Kombat X because both games had long lines. Plus, I knew neither of them were playable so I figured I’d save time and check out games that I could actually spend some time with. Like Far Cry 4

NSFW Gamer

The demo Ubisoft had on display for Far Cry 4 featured a compound you could sneak into and take out guards with stealth or guns blazing. If you went the second route you would raise the alarms and have to fight increasingly strong waves of enemies. It also meant that you could get on the back of and elephant and cause all kinds of chaos. I didn’t get to make it to the elephant part, but there are plenty of vids out there of it.

Far Cry 4‘s graphics were great and the shooting was precise, just like with Far Cry 3. I’m very much looking forward to this installment in the series. I just hope the story is as awesome as Far Cry 3 (an aspect of the game I wasn’t able to delve into at E3).

That was pretty much it for Tuesday. I got to E3 a bit late because I had to do some work that morning, but overall it was a really fun day.

E3 2014 – Day 2

NSFW Gamer

For the second day of E3 (Wednesday) I checked out the West Hall of the Convention Center. That’s where Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo were all set up. It was also where XSEED had their booth so I was able to spend a lot of time with Senran Kagura: Shinovi Versus and Senran Kagura Bon Appétit. I won’t get into what I thought about them here because I already wrote up a whole article on my impressions which you can read HERE.

After that I pretty much just walked around and gawked at all the cool shit Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo had on display. Sony was showing off its PlayStation Now streaming program (which looked fine, no lag at all), Nintendo had, well, lets just say they had a lot of cool stuff, but since I was there for NSFW Gamer I didn’t spend much time in that area, and Microsoft had their exclusive game, Sunset Overdrive, on display. It looked cool, but I doubt I’ll ever play it.

Aside from the usual collection of game sequels and exclusives, VR was a big deal at E3 this year.

Sony had their Project Morpheus VR headsets on display (I didn’t get a chance to check them out, but the device looked pretty) and Oculus Rift had a big showing, but it was the smaller companies that were producing VR accessories that got my attention. Specifically this treadmill thing for first person shooters.

NSFW Gamer

No word on if or when that thing is coming out, but judging by the people who were using it, the device seemed pretty immersive. If I had to guess, just by this year’s E3, I’d say we are on the cusp of a big virtual reality explosion in the next few years. Only time will tell, but judging by the all the buzz around the VR stuff I’d say that the Oculus Rift and Project Morpheus will be game changers when they come out.

That’s it, that was my E3 experience this year. Hopefully next year I’ll be able to take better pics and have a better gameplan to see all the games I want to see. Still, not bad for my freshman effort if I do say so myself.

You can check out the rest of my pics below. Feel free to ask questions in the comment section too. I’ll let you know if I saw something you were interested in.
