NSFW Gamer Review: Senran Kagura Burst

What do you get when you combine incredibly busty schoolgirls, ninjas, and destructible clothes?

Senran Kagura Burst for the Nintendo 3DS.

I know what you’re thinking, all that sounds awesome on paper but how’s the actual game? Surprisingly good, but you’ll have to read the review below to find out if it’s worth $30 or not.

Developer: Marvelous AQL
Publisher: XSEED Games
Release: November 14, 2013
MSRP: $29.99 (3DS eShop)

Senran Kagura Burst is actually two games in one – Senran Kagura and its sequel Senran Kagura Burst. I think XSEED should have renamed the package something other Senran Kagura Burst as it gets pretty confusing to talk about the 3DS game as a whole and the second installment of the same name. Just my two cents.

NSFW Gamer Review: Senran Kagura Burst

Each game tells the story of a rival ninja training school. The developers at Marvelous AQL recommend starting with The Hanzō Academy, where you follow the adventures of the “good” ninja school girls, but you can switch over to The Hebijo Clandestine Girls’ Academy and plays as the “evil” ninjas any time you like. Each game’s story is told through lengthy text based cutscenes from the point of view of a specific character. While the writers won’t win any awards for the story or dialogue, I have to give them credit for trying to flesh out these one dimensional characters and give them meaningful motivations for their actions.

Unfortunately, a lot of times in the same paragraph, they’ll then have one character (usually Katsuragi) talking about motorboating or molesting another one. So yea, there’s that. Actually there’s a lot of sexual innuendo in the dialogue. Since each ninja schoolgirl has to carry around a huge phallic shaped ninja scroll while they fight there’s discussion about where to keep it so it doesn’t get lost. Katsuragi mentions keeping it up her skirt…and since she has a very short skirt I think we can all imagine what she’s talking about. Hot!

I doubt anyone is going to play Senran Kagura Burst for the story though. No, this game is all about the action and the fanservice.

Senran Kagura Burst is like most brawlers. You move from left to right, dispatch all the enemies on the screen, break things for powerups and health, rinse and repeat. Combos are easy to pull off and since the game gives you a generous delay time between hits it’s easy to crank out a 1000+ hit combo. You can level up each character’s Yin and Yang powers, which unlocks new moves and outfits to wear, so going back to previous levels and playing them with a different schoolgirl is a must. Yes, it’s grinding, but it’s still fun.

What sets Senran Kagura Burst apart from other brawlers is how it works the character’s clothes into the gameplay. You start each stage wearing your normal schoolgirl outfit, but once you’ve filled up your ninja gauge you magically shed those boring clothes for a fancy new ones (complete with cutscenes focusing on each girl’s assets while they transform). Once you’re wearing you special ninja costume (none of which look like actual ninjas) you can perform various special room-clearing moves.

Here’s the catch though – your outfits can take damage (yes, you see it in-game) and once it’s completely destroyed, leaving you to fight in your underwear, you take more damage from enemies. Since both your normal schoolgirl outfit and your special ninja outfit have separate damage gauges, it’s smart to hold off transforming until you’ve made some decent progress on the level (especially for harder ones).

Another way you can tackle a stage is by going into “Frantic Mode” during the beginning cutscene. Here you fight just in a bikini. The benefit is you move faster and your hits do more damage, but you in turn take more damage. Also you don’t have a costume meter to worry about while in this mode. Not only is it fun to watch a chick with huge boobs fighting practically nude, but it’s the only way to build up your character’s Yin level. Plus, if you go back and beat every stage on Frantic Mode you unlock something special at the end.

Senran Kagura Burst isn’t a very difficult game. You’ll be pulling off 500 hit combos in your sleep after a while and the enemies don’t provide much of a challenge. There are various types of enemies to contend with from ninjas who shoot fire at you from a distance to ninjas who like to get in close and attack. Thankfully your aerial combos, where you’ll be spending most of your time, keep you up in the air and safe from danger. See, once you start attacking a group of enemies on the ground a green circle will flash on the screen signifying your ability to knock them in the air with the press of a button. Once you and your foes go vertical you can keep your combo going for a few more seconds (leveling up will allow you to stay in the air longer). I’m not exaggerating, I probably defeated 90% of the enemies during the course of the game in the air.

Bosses usually consist of one-on-one fights with a character from the rival ninja school. These are fun but, like the rest of the game, aren’t very challenging. It is satisfying to watch your foe getting her clothes torn off during the fight though.

Seeing as how you’re getting two fun games for $29.99, it’s not hard to recommend Senran Kagura Burst for 3DS owners. Even though the combos are fairly easy to pull off, and the game isn’t all that hard, I still had a blast playing it. The ability to unlock new outfits for the ninja schoolgirls to wear is a nice treat too and kept me going back for more. If you have the funds and the space on your SD card (Senran Kagura Burst is only available in the states through the 3DS eShop) I definitely recommend picking this one up.

Game 3.5/5

NSFW Gamer Review: Senran Kagura Burst

Ok, here’s where Senran Kagura Burst really shines. This game is all about the T&A. In fact, I think only one character in the entire game has a breast size less than DD. That should tell you everything you need to know right there.

The graphics aren’t great, but they get the job done and the boob jiggle is cranked up to 11 (which works great on the small screen where subtle movements are lost). In the dressing room, you can move the camera around and zoom in while you decide which outfit each character is going to wear. After beating the first game you even unlock the ability to tilt the 3DS and look up the girl’s skirt while in the dressing room and you can even blow into the mic to make the skirt move. Sure, why not?

The best part of the game is watching the girls transform mid-fight from normal schoolgirl to ninja badass. The camera zooms in on their tits and asses while clothes disappear and then reappear. Also the cutscene that happens when you clothes are destroyed is pretty hot too.

As far as costumes and character designs go, some are hotter than others, but for the most part each character is pretty jerkable in their own right. My favorite character was Haruka…

…I’m sure you can imagine why. Katsuragi is pretty fucking hot too.

Most of the costumes you unlock are either very sexual and show a lot of skin or are just downright goofy (like a cat costume). You can also unlock accessories for each character as well as change the look of each outfit through a few preset color combinations. There’s a lot to do in the dressing room aside from ogling each character’s titters.

Senran Kagura Burst is one of the more sexually charged games I’ve played in recent memory. The developers at Marvelous AQL definitely know what their target audience wants and delivers. If you like a little T&A with your brawlers then this game is right up your alley.
