Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon Release Date Announced

Philippe Fournier, production manager for Ubisoft, announced on the the PlayStation Blog today that Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon will be hitting PSN on April 30th.

Along with that announcement came the official release trailer for the game, complete with cheesy cutscenes reminiscent of old 80s cartoons.

In case you don’t know what Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is, here’s the skinny:

It is 2007 — the future. Step into the shoes of Rex Power Colt, a cyber-commando sent to a remote island to stop Colonel Ike Sloan from taking over the world with his rogue cyborg army.

For Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, we wanted to go back to the late 80s and early 90s — what we like to call “the VHS era” — when video games were still new, and over-the-top action movies were at their pinnacle. Most of the team grew up during those years, so it was a ton of fun to relive this carefree episode of our lives, where we could watch cartoons like MASK or GI Joe with Uncle Dan on Saturday morning.

As someone who grew up in the 80s I gotta say, this looks pretty radical. Blood Dragon‘s cartoons are perfectly retro, the main character’s dialogue (provided by Michael “Kyle Reese” Biehn) is awesome, and the “future” look of the game is totally from “the VHS era.” Of course, who knows how all this will be sustained in a full single player campaign – will it be 80s overdose? – but we’ll find out soon. Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon will also be hitting XBLA on May 1st.
