Normally when a publisher announces they are re-releasing an 8-year old game, us gamers can expect last generation models up-scaled to 720p at best (i.e. Resident Evil: Code Veronica).
Leave it to id Software to show the industry how it should be done with Doom 3 BFG Edition.
From what’s been announced so far, I’m going to assume that in this case BFG stands for “big fucking game” as this release is going to be vast.
The BFG edition will be available for PC, 360, PS3 and bundled with retail ports of the remastered Xbox Live versions of Doom 1 and 2. This is in addition to the full Doom 3 campaign, Resurrection of Evil expansion, and a new Lost Mission expansion. Full stereophonic 3D support is being implemented along with special support for head-mounted displays like the Sony personal 3D viewer. Imagine running through corridors, fending off the denizens of hell in full 3D! The announcement of an armor mounted flashlight had sealed the deal on this purchase and then I realized that they haven’t even announced what’s in store for the multiplayer component!
The Doom 3 BFG Edition is just the thing to get a new generation of gamers exposed to the series. With a projected 2012 release, could this be a predecessor to a Doom 4 announcement?
