Great news for Borderlands fans – Randy Pitchford and Gearbox Software announced today that we would be getting a new game this year. Oddly enough, it’s a prequel to Borderlands 2 and it’s only coming out for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.
I can honestly say that I didn’t see that coming. I knew we’d be getting more Borderlands at some point – it’s a massively successful franchise after all – but I thought our next trip to Pandora would be on next-gen consoles.
Still, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel sounds pretty cool. It all takes place on Pandora’s moon and features jet packs and ice guns. One new gameplay feature is that you will have to monitor your oxygen levels while you are outside as it servers as both fuel for your jet pack and a source of health.
The story features four “new” vault hunters hired by Handsome Jack and depicts his rise to power. I said “new” because players have actually encountered all of these characters in one form or another in previous Borderlands games. They are: Athena, a crimson lance assassin from the The Secret Armory of General Knoxx DLC. Sheriff Nisha (aka The Sheriff of Lynchwood), the optional boss fight from Borderlands 2. Wilhelm, the first big boss you encounter in Borderlands 2. And finally, Claptrap!
Expect a lot more Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel news, videos, and screenshots between now and when the game is released sometime this year.
